The legendary throat-singer and bayan player Vladimir Oyun Oidupaa's project, Singing with Echoes Through the Universe is now available in two exciting editions:

Standard Edition includes eight new recordings with Tuvan and Russian lyrics, Latin-alphabet transliterations, and English translations, notes by Tuvan Ethnomusicologist Dr. Valentina Suzukei, plus original graphics by Johnna Morrow and photographs. Songs are highest-quality 320 kbps MP3s.

Collectors Edition also includes QT videos of Oidupaa recording three songs. Songs are full-quality 24-bit original mixes.

I’ve heard my share of throat singing from traditional world music to pop covers. But I do not think I’ve heard anything like Arjopa. First, she may be the first female throat singer I’ve heard. Second, her music is neither strictly traditional or pop. Her website calls it “Shamanic Folk Pop” yet it has elements of the traditional, psychedelic, and even punk. The four tracks on This is Arjopa are vocals with sensitive acoustic backing. Her vocals tend to alternate between straight singing and the more esoteric throat singing, leaving the listener a bit teetering in both worlds. I believe that is the result this artist is looking for. Her songs and vocals reminds me heavily of P. J. Harvey and to a lesser extent, Marianne Faithful. I really like this album and recommend it to anyone who like a taste of the unusual mixed with the known.

Throat singing sound without droning noise

It has been a while but work, school, and a full house keeps me from being able to advance too quickly.
However, I have started to be able to produce a very clear Sygyt. It is hard to control the tone it makes but just being able to hear it is making me happy.

I still need to figure out how the people in my throat singing cd's can make this sound almost completely without the droning noise that comes with it. *other than a lot of practice :P *

der obertonkurs am 7. und 8. jänner 2011 war ein genuß . das stiegenhaus der musikhauptschule wurde von obertonkaskaden der teilnehmerInnen beschallt, einfach wunderschön. auch die kreativität, durchhaltevermögen, ehrgeiz und genauigkeit der vielen jugendlichen, die mit dabei waren, haben mich beeindruckt. auszug aus den schönen rückmeldungen (danke!!):du bist individuell auf jede/n eingegangen! ...du hast aus jedem/r was "rausgeholt"...danke für deine offene, gewinnende und sympathische art!ich fand einen mir bis jetzt neuen zugang zu meiner stimme-zu meinen klangräumen und meinen stimmeinsatz...war überwältigt davon, in so kurzer zeit selbst hörbare obertöne produzieren zu können. deine vermittlung war super- du bist auf den einzelnen total eingegangen, wirklich jeder konnte mit deinen erklärungen was anfangen!

Liebe Freunde,

ein erfülltes Jahr reiche an Erlebnissen und Erfahrungen geht zu Ende. Zeit und Gelegenheit mich und das gesamte Lichthaus-Team bei allen Kollegen, Kursteilnehmern, Veranstaltern und Kunden für die Treue und gute Zusammenarbeit im vergangenen Jahr zu bedanken.

Das neue Jahresprogramm ist in Druck und wird nach Weihnachten verschickt werden. Auf diesem Wege jedoch schon einmal eine Vorschau, damit Sie uns fürs nächste Jahr in Ihre Planung einbeziehen können. Zum 25 jährigen Jubiläum des Obertonchores wird zu unserem Konzert in der Maternus Kirche Köln am 12. Februar bitte weitersagen- unsere neue CD  Take me as I am - Harmonic Treasures  erscheinen. Ein Werk, in dem nach - Rise my Soul, Spirit come, Earth Spirit, Abwun, Healing Songs, Om Mani Padme Hum, und Healing Buddha - unser ureigenstes Anliegen zum Tragen kommt, nämlich Musik als Ausdruck eines kommunikativen Gruppenprozesses, als Meditation in der Gemeinschaft zu zelebrieren. Durch Arbeit an Obertongesang, Rhythmus, Improvisation, Klang, instant composing, mantrischen Chorälen entstehen musikalische Klangräume, in denen sich die Seele ausbreiten kann. Diese Neue Meditative Musik ist zum Modell einer neuen Kultur des Singens geworden.

In der Pädagogischen Arbeit bieten wir neben den Tages- und Wochenendseminaren in diesem Jahr wieder eine fortlaufende Jahresgruppe an, in der wir über eine vertiefende und verfeinernde Arbeit mit Obertönen, Rhythmus, heilsamen Liedern und Tänzen ein kraftvolles harmonisches Feld entstehen lassen. - Heilende Klänge - Heilsames Singen - zusammen mit der Ärztin und Psychotherapeutin Jutta Reichardt im Europäischen Zentrum für Meditation und Begegnung, der schönen Neumühle im Saarland. Das Abwun-Projekt - eine ganze Woche auf  Pfingsten zu - wird dieses Jahr in Melatz im Allgäu stattfinden und mit zwei Aufführungen am Pfingstwochenende ausklingen. Im goldenen Oktober werden wir die beliebte und besonders kraftvolle Verbindung von Jodeln und Obertongesang im Klangraum Allgäu mit seiner reizvollen Lage, seinem Naturecho und der Nähe zum Artemisia Kräutergarten anbieten.

In der Christuskirche Köln wird wieder übers Jahr ein regelmäßiger Singkreis mit Klangmeditationen jeden letzten Dienstag im Monat stattfinden.  Die letzten fünf Dienstage vor Weihnachten singen wir das Abwun. Bitte jetzt schon notieren und weitersagen!
Den Jahresabschluss feiern wir wieder -wie seit 6 Jahren- am Abend vor Silvester mit unserer - Baden in Klängen - Veranstaltung im Schwimmbad ELEMENT in Nümbrecht.

Die Klangexkursion Lesbos wird erst wieder im Sommer 2012 vom 18. Juli bis 1. August stattfinden, voraussichtlich mit einem Konzert auf der malerischen Burg in Molyvos zusammen mit Jutta Reichardt und Carien Wijnen. Weiterhin planen wir 2012 erneut eine Klangexkursion ins kulturelle Herz von Bali, u.a. mit einem Ketchak-workshop in Ubud.

PLEASE HELP TSERENDAVAA

Dear friends,

In the past many of you have helped me to raise money for various charitable Tuvan causes, and now I ask for your help for a great Mongolian throat-singer in need.

Some of you will recognize the name Tserendavaa. He is a well-known, major Mongolian throat-singing master from Chandman Sum, and is well-represented on such classic cds as Jargalant Altai. Besides being a singer and one of the leading sources for foreigners for decades regarding Mongolian Xoomii, he is a rarity in that he and his family are still herders.

Johnna, Andrew, Jens, Hosoo and I enjoyed a session with him last summer in Chandman, and true to form he was very generous and interesting. He didn't bring it up, but we heard that his family had suffered tremendous animal losses in the terrible Dzud of last winter, and might be forced to stop herding.

My friends Michael Ormiston and Candida Valentina, two leading English throat-singers and long-time students of Tserendavaa's have organized a fund-raiser to help him. You can either buy the DVD they are selling for him, or just make a donation via PayPal to ormi_khoomii at yahoo.com

Tserendavaa’s “Heaven’s Will” DVD

Mongolian Khöömii Maestro Tserendavaa is a living tradition, he was born, lives & breathes the sounds of the legendary and real landscape of Khöömii. He is respected within his community & nationally as a performer & teacher of his 7 techniques of Khöömii and is a key source for Mongolian & European ethnomusicologists and students of Khöömii.

During last winter's (2009/10) tragic Dzud, Tserendavaa and his family lost at least 1,000 livestock, leaving him with only 120 animals. This has put Tserendavaa’s existence as a true herdsman in jeopardy. He may have barely enough food to survive the tough Mongolian climate and might need to give up herding and move to live in deprivation in Khovd town or Ulaanbaatar.

This unique DVD includes “Mongol Khöömii” a film made by Mongolian musicologist Badraa in the early 1980’s and was first shown on Mongolian TV. It is a real find, “Khoomii gold dust”, “Tserendavaa in concert” a live concert filmed in London 2002 with Candida Valentino and Michael Ormiston. This was an acoustic concert with no microphones and find Tserendavaa in great form.

“Message from “Mongolia” is a short documentary with an interview with Tserendavaa and concert footage, plus extra footage of Tserendavaa singing in Chandman Sum, Khovd Aimag, his homeland.

New to throat singing. Blog for progress

Hello, my name is Joe and after many half attempts, I'm now learning Khoomei. Also, I do not blog so don't expect much out of this. This is to help me keep on track and maybe get some outside help.

There doesn't seem to be any throat singers where I live so I must do this entirely without physical help. So far there have been many people helping me in the Khoomei yahoo group and that has been a huge help.

My progress thus far: I'm not sure what to think about my current situation. When doing khoomei, My voice doesn't sound like the others I have heard in the internet. many have this growl or dryness but mine just sounds like my normal voice just a bit higher. Perhaps I'm not tightening the proper part of my throat, or maybe I'm unknowingly using my nose too much.

With this set back however, I can still hear overtones in my voice which is good because I ultimately want to learn Sygyt. Oh well, practice and comments is whats going to solve this : D

yodeling and overtones

I'm currently creating some very specific notated exercises for combining yodeling with overtones (SATB), using 2 completely different approaches.
The best I've heard in this area is Christian Zehnder, who has cleverly woven his national Swiss tradition into it. I'd like to open some discussion about this topic- any experience with overtone yodeling or fresh new ideas?

Anyway, in a yodel surfing expedition, found this completely amazing blog site 'Yodel Heaven', which has a huge amount of rare (downloadable!) mp3s from all over the world, including a bunch of overtone and throat singing tracks. (Hint) You'll find Arthur Miles there too!

Mascara Video Testversion

Hier ein Testvideo zu meiner Komposition Mascara. Ich habe einfach meine Basteleien drauflosgefilmt und es dann zur Musik geschnitten. In der Mitte sind einige Ansichten aus dem bisherigen Entstehungsprozess. In der fertigen Fassung wird es wohl eine Mischung aus Einstellungen mit der Papierfigur und von mir im Kostüm geben.Im Gegensatz zum Video ist die Musik schon so, wie sie gedacht ist - wobei, ich mag den Gedanken des offenen, unabgeschlossenen Werkes und es wird sicher noch weitere Versionen von Mascara geben.

Die Musik dieser Klangmeditationen wurde im Sommer 2008 im Ökowerk Berlin Grunewald aufgenommen. Die Stücke entstanden dabei quasi „unter Tage“, nämlich in einem ehe­maligen Wasserspeicher – einem einzigartigen Klangraum mit nahezu zehn Sekunden Nachklang. Meine Instrumente waren dabei mein Obertongesang, eine Shrutibox und Tanpura aus Indien, ein Khomus aus dem Altai, eine Springdrum aus den USA sowie ver­schiedene Klangschalen aus Nepal. Die Klangme­ditationen entstanden dabei nicht in einem Ton­studio, auch wurden sie nicht „abgemixt“. Sie ent­standen im Moment selbst, an einem Stück als ein ganzes Stück. So gilt mein Dank dem Ökowerk, im Wasserspeicher meine Musik einspielen zu können. Max Fürth danke ich für sein sehr feines Gehör und Geduld, die Klangmeditationen mit einem mobilen Aufnahmestudio aufzunehmen. Dankbar bin ich, dass ich Claudia Dose’s Werk „Heart String“ für das Booklet und Label dieser CD verwenden durfte. Ich wünsche dir viel Freude mit diesen Klangmeditationen.

Im Juli 2009 trafen wir drei uns im Milelja Inselgarten auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos, wo wir jeweils unsere Seminare hielten. Beim spontanen Singtreffen stellte sich heraus, wie schön unsere Stimmen zusammenklingen und unsere Herzen miteinander schwingen. Wir verabredeten uns zum Sonnenuntergang am alten Hamam, der heißen Heilquelle in Eftalou um dort dem Meer und der Heilquelle unsere Klänge und Lieder darzubringen.


Mithilfe des ZOOM H2 nahmen wir dieses spontane Konzert auf, das nun in Form dieser wunderbaren CD vorliegt. Die Wellen des Meeres, vorbeikommende Passanten und die Geräusche des Windes begleiteten uns dabei. Als die Sonne untergegangen war, gingen wir in den klangvollen Innenraum des Hamam und sangen an der Quelle.
