An idealized, orderly, and multisymmetric presentation of parts of the interval material from Just intonation. All intervallic pairs with the same distance through the center are complementary within the octave.
The compass rose at the top left indicates that one moves horizontally (primarily the axis from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock) in perfect fifths (right) and perfect fourths (left), respectively; in the direction of the axis from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock and…

OVERTONE SINGING
INTERTWINES MUSIC, MATHS, ... AND LANGUAGE!
Hopefully the above statement doesn't sound too overrating for anyone who personally has given attention to overtone singing, where the music very obviously is expressed through number and wovel sounds.
Two days ago I appealed for assistance to translate the interface of the Overtone Spiral program, and I am overwhelmed by the kind and generous responses, which may lead to a German, a Spanish, a Romanian, and maybe…

Marco Gianotta is a great friend and a formidable programmer. Some years ago he fulfilled my dream of seeing the overtone spiral in an interactive version, and he even added some opportunities which I hadn't dared to even dream of.
I am still confident that the overtone spiral/octave spiral is a most fundamental approach to the essence of music, and that this visualization may help not only to get a better grip of the nature of overtone singing and to relevant exercises, but also to get…

It is an interesting experience even thoughthe reverberation room is not designed for beautiful acoustics but to be able to meausure transmission loss of building elements (absorbtion of different materials). It is situated in the Technical University of Denmark, in Lyngby, north of Copenhagen. The surfaces are hard (concrete), and the cones on…

"How do the bowls (acetabula) sound? - What a sweet tone they produce when they are struck in different ways. Man accepts their sound with such great gladness that he believes hearing to be the best sense."…

Also Dorian, step II-III; Lydian, step VII-I; Mixolydian, step VI-VII; Aeolian, step V-VI; Locrian, step IV-V & Ionian, step III-IV.
If we should attempt to map the most obvious combinations of fundamental and harmonics in overtone singing, it is essential to find a simple way of illustrating them in sounds and images as…

If you sing within in a modal scale and you want your accentuated harmonics to stay within that framework here is your key diagram.
The smaller, divided circles indicate which harmonics can be accentuated at each step of the modal scales if you want to keep the harmonics within the pattern of the scale.
Intervals from the Harmonic Series:
- Perfect…

'Chak Ratio'
In the Indian source texts about chakras and in traditional imagery, there is relatively much agreement on their location and the number of petals of the lotuses, so it is partly understandable if some tend to believe that these traits have their background in the hidden constitution of man – in subtle 'bodies'…

The octave spiral is a structure that clarifies the ratios of the harmonic series. It illustrates something essential and universal, so it is obvious for anyone to try to understand and experiment with this pattern - first and foremost singers and musicians.
Marco Gianotta has made his design and programming expertise available for the project.
The program will not work in Internet Explorer, but in…

There is one major hurdle for most singers who set out to learn to sing overtones:
It may be difficult to hear one's own accentuated harmonics
On the other hand the majority of participants in a beginners workshop, fortunately will be able to hear the harmonics of the others, so we are reassured that it is something that most singers can crack in a relatively short time.
If you have the noble ambition to reach a…

Awareness of modal scales is essential for overtone singers!
Milton Mermikides is a very talented musician and he is equipped with a deep sense and understanding of the inherent structures of music. I became aware of him as an ally in my mission to debunk 432 Hz superstition, which he has written an…

The notion that in the tonal world the frequency value 432 Hz is an expression of something special, has proven to be tenacious.

In 1999 I was a beginner in the art of overtone singing. My recording outfit was also very primitive. I fell in love with places with unusual acoustic properties, above all an abandoned oil tank situated at the water front of an area which used to be a industrial harbour but now has become a mundane quarter of living close to the center of Copenhagen.
In the…

A friend of mine shared a link on my facebook wall. I followed it and read Mike Spinak's article The Golden Section Hypothesis: A Critical Look. My friend who comes from Sicily had asked me about my opinion, so I wrote the following reflections:
Wow, great article! Thanks for sharing!
There is no doubt that the overall picture is that we have become so infatuated with…
