a common space & database for harmonic overtones
Singing is not merely a question of 'hitting notes' but to turn your body into an organic musical instrument. Through the years I have met professional singers - rhythmically as well as classically trained - who had hardly any conscious experience of how the resonance works in the body. Simply by changing the pitch, the volume and the wowel quality, the resonance in the body will change. My stage colleague through several years has studied the intricate Indian classical teachings and has an ability to consciously move the sound in the body to a degree that most western trained singers find hard to believe. The following exercise is very simple:
Find a pleasant pitch and intonate a humming sound the resonance of which you try to move around along with your hands:
Mouth- neck- cheek- collarbone- top of the head- chest.
The path can be seen at the spiral which I added to Albrecht Dürers (1471-1528) human proportion study. Maybe more interesting is that Dürer himself added the harmonic length proportions as measure to the far left: 1/1- 1/2- 1/3- 1/4- 1/5-...
